Balearics

Formentera

Formentera is the smallest (19km long) and least known of the four main Balearics islands. It used to only be reachable by boat from Ibiza but now you can get there from the Spanish mainland. It is known for its many pristine beaches and the fact that nude sunbathing is allowed on most of them!. Formentera comprises just one municipality, also called Formentera, and has a population of around seven and a half thousand. A local dialect of Catalan is spoken in Formentera, while the official languages are Catalan and Spanish. Italian, Spanish and German can be heard extensively in the summer. It has a hippy feel about the island and was popular with Bob Dylan and his mates in the 60s.
