International College Spain is an international community school founded in 1980 by the late entrepreneur and philanthropist, Manouchehr Farhangi. It is now part of the renowned group of 42 schools across the world, Nord Anglia Education.

What is the philosophy of the school?
The philosophy of the school is to provide students with a high quality international education which places a strong emphasis on fostering respect for other people’s identity and culture. This is achieved through the provision of a challenging curriculum which develops critical, principled thinking within a positive learning environment and which addresses the students’ academic, social, emotional, physical, technological, aesthetic and moral needs. The school also promotes an active interest in learning, enabling students to acquire the skills, attitudes and qualifications necessary for them to become successful, responsible citizens.

What curriculum does the school follow and what language are pupils taught in?
The aim of the IB Programmes is to develop internationally minded people who, recognizing their common humanity and shared guardianship of the planet, help to create a better and more peaceful world.

The School delivers the International Baccalaureate (IB) Curriculum designed by the International Baccalaureate Organisation. International College Spain is one of the few schools in the world authorised to run all three IBO courses: the Primary Years Programme in Kindergarten through to Grade 5, the Middle Years Programme in Grades 6 through to 10 and the Diploma Programme in Grades 11 and 12.

The language of instruction is English with Spanish as a subject all the way through the grades and French is offered in the Secondary School. There are over 18 different mother tongue language programmes also on offer and an extensive English as a Second Language programme.

Approximately what is the ratio of local pupils to non-Spanish pupils? How many nationalities do you currently have within the college?
ICS has 60 different nationalities, a truly international school with only 34% of Spanish pupils.

Are foreign parents concerned that their children may not be getting a sufficient level of Spanish?
Spanish is an important aspect of our curriculum and we ensure that both native and non-native students are immersed in the Spanish language from age 3 – 18. Results in the IB Programme throughout are excellent in terms of Spanish Language and Literature with very experienced and qualified teachers in both Primary and Secondary Schools. We also have a Spanish Universities Counsellor and are involved in many cultural trips across Spain as well as fundraising for local charities.

How does the school ensure that children are sufficiently integrated into the local community?
The variety of events we offer and the interaction within the local community are essential for our school. We have external visitors and speakers and are very involved in fundraising for various local charities.

How can parents gauge the academic success of the school?
The 96% pass rate of the IB Diploma Programme and the success in gaining places at the top universities worldwide is testament to our academic programme.

Approximately what percentage of children go on to University from the school and do many of them go on to higher education outside of Spain?
Students at ICS can be assured of receiving an education that will prepare them for further education at universities worldwide. 95% of our students go on to study at universities, 45% to the UK, 22% to the USA, 19% in Spain and the rest to other countries including Canada, Japan, France, Switzerland, the Netherlands and Korea. This year 3 students have been accepted by Cambridge University in the UK, one at Yale in the USA and another at Stamford in the USA.
