  • Garraf International School

Centro Yoga Om, Vilanova i la Geltru Image

What was the motivation behind starting the Garraf International School, how long has it taken to establish the school and what challenges did you face?
The motivation came from international parents and teachers living in the Garraf area, who wanted their children to attend a school that offered something different from that which is currently on offer. It has taken about a year of work so far. The main challenge was finding a suitable and available building.

Why was the Masia in Mas Mestre chosen as the school’s premises?
It is a lovely building in a beautiful location. It is also very close to the Mas Mestre swimming pool, tennis courts and football pitch.

Why will the school be different to other international schools?
The main difference is that the Headmaster and staff will be accountable to a Board of Governors.
    .
When is the school due to open and who can apply for a place?
The school is due to open on 10 September 2008.  Any child born between 1998 and 2003 can apply.

    What are the school’s facilities?
We will have 6 classrooms, a hall, offices, a reception area and play areas. We have also been offered the use of the Mas Mestre swimming pool, tennis courts and football pitch.

Does the school have an educational philosophy or mission?
To build a thriving international community where everyone’s contribution and success is both valued and encouraged.

What kind of proportion of international to local pupils is the school expected to attract?

We expect about 50% local pupils and 50% international pupils.

    What curriculum will be followed?
Initially we will be following the British national curriculum with a view to following the IBO curriculum in the future.

In what language will the curriculum be taught?
Literacy, numeracy, science and technology, and humanities will be taught in English.

How much Spanish/Catalan will be taught and from what age?
From Year 1 pupils will be having two classroom lessons of Spanish and Catalan per week. In addition, wherever possible, physical education, drama, music, dance and art will be taught in Catalan or Spanish in order to reinforce what has been learnt in the classroom.

Will pupils achieve fluency in Spanish and Catalan?
That is our aim. The Headmaster will be learning Catalan as well!

What strategies will be used to teach students who are not fluent in English?
We will be offering extra lessons for those children who are struggling with their English. In addition we will be asking parents who have free time to come and assist those children who are struggling with their reading.

How can you reassure prospective parents that the level of education will be above average?
We believe in excellence. We also believe that this excellence cannot be achieved without the help of the parents and the local community.

How will pupils be integrated in the local community?
We have already established links with a local dance school and the Sitges rugby club. More links will be established once the school is established.

Who will be the head teacher of the school and what is his/her experience?
The head teacher of the Garraf International School has 14 years of management experience in international education and has worked in 6 different countries. He has taught a range of subjects to pupils aged from three to adult. In addition to mainstream teaching he has worked with pupils with behavioral and learning difficulties in outdoor education centres and a Young Offenders’ Institute. He is a keen sports enthusiast and his Spanish is improving daily. His next challenge is to learn Catalan.

How will the school select teachers?
Teachers will be appointed on the basis of their enthusiasm for the new school as well as their qualifications and experience.

What kinds of library resources will be available to students?
Initially, we will have a small library. We will try to expand this as quickly as possible. All donations will be gratefully received.

What extracurricular opportunities (sports, clubs, community service etc) will be available for students?
We would like to have a wide range of extracurricular activities. We would welcome the help of the parents in establishing these.

Will the school follow any specific religious philosophy?
    All religions will be respected.

What kinds of support or resources will the school offer parents?
As soon as the first pupils are enrolled a Parents Association will be established. The school will work very closely with the PA in order to ensure parents receive the necessary support and resources.

    What are the school fees?
Fees: 7200€ per year. Matriculation fee: 1650€. Bond (returnable when a child leaves or graduates): 2000€

What is the application process? If a parent was interested in the school what would be the next steps?
Parents should send an e-mail with details of their child’s name, nationality and date of birth to info@garrafinternationalschool.com  They will then receive an invitation to a meeting.

"Our 2 children Yannis, 6 years and Florian, 5 years are going to in the Deutsche Schule. The Kindergarten is focusing very much on manual, artistic and playful activities, developing imagination, creativity and autonomy. Classes are made of 18 kids: 6 being 3 years old, 6 being 4 years old and 6 being 5 years old. This concept give a sense of responsibility to children, since, among other, each 3 years old child gets a 5 years old child to help him. There is almost no academic education, only the 5 years old have a couple of hours dedicated during the week to learn numbers and letters... a very different concept from the Catalan school!
The School from 6 years old, is working as well with an innovative education concept, fostering the autonomy of the children. Most of the education is made in German; however there are hours dedicated to Spanish (5 hours a week) and even Catalan (1 hour a week). The school offers a lot of activities and organizes events such as Christmas market, flea market, running. School starts at 8 and ends up at 1.30 pm. Afternoon, there are many optional activities such as hip hop, tennis, swimming, Aikido, football. The level is very good, and teachers are all native speakers.
Overall, we are very satisfied with the school. This is an excellent alternative for foreigners living in the Barcelona area". (SGF, Jan 2014)

"Our decision to move to Spain from Scotland four years ago was prompted by our sons desire to learn professional tennis. ES International School was fundamental in the process due to the association with the Sanchez Casal tennis academy. Our daughter, who is not a tennis player, also attends ES International School and chose the school because of the wonderful environment. The school is situated in a beautiful campus surrounded by tennis courts, swimming pool and tree lined avenues. A place of energy and positivity. The school encourages the students from many different countries and cultures to come together and support each other in a family environment. The excellent faculty are always available in guiding our children in both academic and lifes lessons. They are treated as young adults and have matured and grown in their time there. The ES International School strives to create "world citizens" and, when they leave to make their way in their lives, I believe the school will have played their part in achieving this with our children" (CC, May 2011)

"I have chosen ES International School because I wanted my son Dakota, 16 years old, to improve his English (he speaks it fluently but he had always studied in a French school) and.... as I was looking for a place with additional facilities, I found this school perfect because of the sport installations and orientation. They have a gym and the best personal trainers for him to be on top form for when he returns to motorcycle racing. That way he can study, improve his languages, keep the form and enjoy meeting new friends from all over the world at the same time." (Barbara Mamola, May 2011)

"We are extremely happy with the work done by our son at ES International School during this last year. He had an amazing experience at ESIS not only academically but also at the personal level, interacting with a very special group of educators who showed him more than what the curriculum called for. We want you all to feel our warm appreciation and know that we shall always have you in our memories as an excellent group of professionals who positively helped shape the future of our son." Saint George’s School is a private non-funded educational institution. It is located in Fornells de la Selva, five minutes from the centre of Girona. It was founded in 1988 with the objective of offering qualitative bilingual education, where the English language is used in all the subjects taught throughout the school. The teaching throughout the centre follows the LOE’s (Legal Obligatory Education) educational system from which the Infant, Primary, Secondary and Baccalaureate Education is established in Catalunya. Pupils learn and live with the English language, not as a foreign language but as a language used in the teaching-learning process. In order to encourage language acquisition they use a system of immersion into the English language where the class teacher is always a native English speaker.

"My daughter Maayan has been going to St George's since 2008 and we are very happy with the school and so is she. She went to the local village school until she was 8, and then we felt it was getting to small. I feel that St George's school is a very happy place. There is a great, friendly atmosphere there and the children seem stimulated, involved and engaged. Maayan adores her teachers. I was worried about her getting behind in English and that has been taken care of. Her Castellano has also improved dramatically. The facilities there are great., and they do a lot of projects, and activities. There is a strong emphasis on reading which i think is very important, and they don't over burden the children with homework at this age, the Spanish school hours here are so long!" "Our 2 children Yannis, 6 years and Florian, 5 years are going to in the Deutsche Schule.

"Our decision to move to Spain from Scotland four years ago was prompted by our son's desire to learn professional tennis. The excellent faculty are always available in guiding our children in both academic and life's lessons. They are treated as young adults and have matured and grown in their time there. The ES International School strives to create "world citizen's" and, when they leave to make their way in their lives, I believe the school will have played their part in achieving this with our children" (CC, May 2011)

That way he can study, improve his languages, keep the form and enjoy meeting new friends from all over the world at the same time.

"We couldn't be happier. My son had been going to the local municipal school (we were on the waiting list for Hamelin) and we thought it might be OK for him to be immersed in Catalan for a year. He was only three and he found the experience overwhelming. He seemed to struggle a lot and his personality was changing. The school itself has a very good reputation, but it just didn't work for him. When he started at Hamelin, he blossomed. As you probably know, at that age the classes are taught primarily in English and I think it helped to build his confidence (and to like school again). The teachers have been absolutely LOVELY. They made the transition for Alex very smooth, showed him lots of love and affection and after only a couple of weeks, he started making new friends. Nearly every day they teach some Catalan and Spanish, so he is now picking it up more gradually (which I think is less stressful). Since he started, I have had six-year olds to nine-year olds come up to me to practice their English - and I was surprised by the high standard. So, although they don't speak Spanish yet, I think children will find it easy to integrate and to be accepted. Alex loves school now" (TM, May 2009)

"I have found Hamelin to be a very dynamic school with young, motivated teachers, although the focus on different languages may not suit all children. They use the Jolly Phonics range of books for learning to read and write in English (which are apparently the most commonly used material in primary schools in England and Wales). Spanish and Catalan are given equal importance and the children have a choice of learning French or Chinese from the age of 6. The school has an excellent academic reputation but also places equal importance on creativity, sports activities, social skills and autonomy. Swimming lessons are incorporated into the school day rather than after school. In P3 my daughter went on colonias for 3 days and in P4 she went ski-ing for 5 days. These trips are not compulsory but it is strongly recommended that the children attend because the staff feel that the children have a chance to grow and develop away from their usual surroundings. The children came back from their trips with huge smiles and lovely stories to tell. All excursions, whether for half a day or 5 days are incredibly well organised. The end of year show was a delight. My only complaint is that there are very few native English speaking teachers "(Jane Mitchell, May 2009)"

"St Peter's school is in the "Zona alta" in the residential district of Pedralbes, with fantastic views over Barcelona. I have found it to be the perfect school for my children - now aged 10,12, and 14. When we arrived in Barcelona 3 years ago it was the closest match I found to "English style" schooling, but with a total immersion in the Spanish way of life. They wear a uniform and the teaching staff in the junior school are predominantly English - this changes in the senior school to predominantly Spanish. The school teaches a curriculum close to the English curriculum, but obviously they are teaching English as the foreign language. In the senior school they take the "Bachillerato". The pupils are around 75 - 80% Spanish, a great positive for us because my children arrived speaking no Spanish and are now fluent. They are also learning French, German and Catalan. I have found the emphasis on work just about right. They have more homework as they progress through the school, and they are also encouraged to participate in after school clubs such as Volleyball, Football and even Chinese. The school fosters a sense of community, and I have been very impressed by the way they encourage the children to 'think' - there are regular writing competitions and participation in group and solo 'projects' throughout the school year. The school outings are both educational and fun, and the children are taught to consider the world around them and their relationships with others, giving the ideal balance between "traditional" schooling and exam preparation and the "social" aspects that give the children the necessary skills to develop as well rounded individuals. Parents play an important part and St Peter's keep you well informed as to the progress of your children. My children are very happy and have made great friendships as well as gaining so much with mastering another language" (KR, Feb 2007)
